What is Green Space?

According to Dictionary.com Green Space is defined as “A plot of undeveloped land separating or surrounding areas of intensive residential or industrial use that is maintained for recreational enjoyment”Â

This states well what the camp ground is. Additionally, the campground may be considered an educational green space used for the conveyance of information in an provoking landscape.Â

T-Shirt Pick-Up

For those of you who ordered a shirt, thank you! But, you can come pick them up during COMMON HOUR ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26TH outside the LIBRARY. I will be there with everyones orders and shirts. So come pick ‘em up and give me the money for the shirts! Hope you all like them!

Clean Up

To all who Participated in the campout this week. We took down all the tents and put all of the university’s gear away and we found quite a bit of personal gear. If you left a sleeping bag up there it is in the remaining large tent, camp chairs rest against the building, and some random stuff sets on the picknick tables. If you have any questions feel free to drop Scott an email sms7999 {at} sru(.)edu

Oops!

Sorry guys. When I was tinkering with the email form, I accidentally broke it. Whoops! If anyone tried to send an email and it wasn’t sending correctly, it was because of me. Sorry. I fixed the problem, so everyone should be good to go now. Please send your email again.

Just runnin' the numbers

Since I had some free time on my hands, I thought I would delve a little deeper into the parking lot situation, specifically the numbers behind it all. Here is what I’ve come up with:

  • 126 – The number of spaces proposed to be built on the camp grounds.
  • 325 – The size, in square feet, of an average sized parking space.
  • 55,000 – The size in square feet of a 126 space parking lot.
  • 1,500 – The construction costs per space for a parking lot.
  • 1,890,000 – The cost in dollars of constructing 126 parking spaces.
  • 8,105 – The number of undergrad and graduate students attending SRU.
  • 2.33 – The number of $100 textbooks SRU could give students with $1.89m
  • 40.4 – The number of inches of rainfall Slippery Rock gets in a year.
  • 357,120,000 – The amount of rainfall in inches3, the lot would get in a year.
  • 1,545,974 – The number of gallons of rain fall the lot would get.
  • 2.3 – The number of olympic-sized pools that could be filled.

Greenspace Needs More Attention

Hey guys, just wanted to thank all of you again for the support, but we need to get more word out that this letter writing campaign is for saving the educational greenspace we have here on campus. We think that students may be getting the wrong impression of what we are trying to do. Camping is not one of our major concerns, even though we are having a lot of fun with it.
We need to emphasize our need for the campgrounds and surrounding areas as an educational space.

We would also like to gain more attention with the administration. The way to do all of this is to continue to write letters to the administration, and also try and get our parents involved with writing letters. Remember to keep it professional and also prove your point. DON’T BASH ANY IDEAS! We have to consider everything.

We also have planned for this upcoming Saturday another jam session at the campgrounds, so come on down and show your support! Keep it up guys! Also, if you would like to read the article that was on the front page of The Rocket, here’s the link for it: http://www.theonlinerocket.com/media/…/Campout.Protests.Parking.Lot.Plans

Good suggestions when thinking about your own letter….

Dave posted this on the facebook group, but they are good things to think about when anyone is writing a letter. Read over this stuff and try to answer some of these questions in your letter.

Hey everyone,
While your at the campout this week, think about these types of questions to help back your case:
1. What will you say to the administration when they ask what other options they have to parking?
2. What benifits does the campground have to the university?
3. Other ways to get around student parking. ie. Freshmen can’t have parking passes if they live x miles away or people who live in keister or south rock can’t have parking passes.
4. Where can other places be paved to make more parking if they are set fast that they want more parking?

Just a couple suggestions for everyone to start thinking about.

P.S. There is a second sample letter up on this site. It follows a slightly different form compared to the other one, but it should be just as effective. Please read both and let us know what you think. Please feel free to write your own letter as well.

Jam Session Wednesday Night!

Tomorrow night, Wednesday the 20th, there will be a Jam session at the campground starting at 9 pm. Bring any and all musical instruments you would be interested in using to share your talents around a campfire. Any questions contact Koi at saa6536 {at} sru(.)edu

Can’t wait to hear you out there!

Campout starts tonight!

Tonight will be the first night for the campout to help save the educational green-space! We already have tents pitched, and have plenty of sleeping bags to go around. All we need now is you! If you need more information contact Alex.

The entrance to the campgrounds is beyond the Rock Apartments, next to the Leadership Course. Everyone should show up every night this week to show their support!
