Today is Blog Action Day. A day where bloggers and readers all over the world raise their voices in defense of the environment.
- Of the 33 cities projected to have at least 8 million residents by 2015, at least 21 are coastal cities that will have to contend with sea-level rise from climate change.
- Farmed animals produce more greenhouse gas emissions (18%) than the world’s entire transport system (13.5%).
- Just a quarter (27 per cent) of private homes have adequate loft insulation, while almost a half (44 per cent) of social sector houses boast 150mm of insulation or more.
- Around half of household waste arises from purchases made at supermarkets and convenience stores. A quarter of all rubbish put out by households is retail packaging.
- Worldwide, some 60 million indigenous people are almost completely reliant on forest resources for their livelihoods – for food and fuel, medicines and materials.
- Of the 3 billion urban dwellers today, 1 billion live in “slums,” defined as areas where people cannot secure key necessities such as clean water, a nearby toilet, or durable housing.
If you have a blog, please post anything about the environment to raise awareness. If you don’t, tell a random person an astonishing fact about their environmental impact. It is time to bring the environment to the forefront of everyone’s mind. It all starts with grassroots movements like Leave It Green. Keep doing what you guys do, and maybe we’ll be alright.
