Litter Getter Day

Today is Litter-Getter Day. We will be meeting at the Campground at 3 to pick up some trash. Come on out, and bring your friends!

The Festival

Hey everyone, I wanted to say thanks to everyone who came out for Leave It Green’s first annual Bike and Music Festival. The turnout was great! The long day started off with a bike maintenance class courtesy of Scott Medeiros!

At two, we kicked off the critical mass bike ride; we had close to 80 cyclist show up ranging from all ages. We took over the small town of Slippery Rock riding through campus, up and down main street, and then down Kiester road, all to raise awareness and promote bicycling.

After the ride, we had guest speakers Dave Krack and Scott Bricker. Dave Krack is from Butler and runs a free bike shop and a bike giveaway program called Fixed Gear. Scott Bricker is from Bike Pittsburgh. Both speakers covered many topics that involved biking in general, building a biking community, and how to stay safe while biking.

After the speakers three bands played late into the night. Brad Yoder from Pittsburgh provided some mellow and fun tunes, Dali Rocket drove all the way from Michigan just to entertain the crowd. Slippery Rock’s own The Unified Theory, finished the bands off with some energetic jamming tunes. Soon after the bands finished the tents went up, the camp fires were lit and s’mores were made.

It was an amazing and successful day. Leave It Green would like to thank several people for making it all happen, The Pa Film Institute and Larurel Dagnon for the funding (remember, the films show in the ATS auditorium at 7:30 Monday-Thursday); the Cycling Club for the free bike that was raffled off; Julie McNeil for her organizing skills; the speakers for their knowledge; the bands for their tunes; and of course all the participants.

I would also like to personally thank Rachel DeWolf for all of her hard work, this festival was her idea and she made it happen, thanks Rachel!

It is also important to note that one of the original Leave It Green founding members, Abbie Spear showed up to the Festival. Abbie has inspired Rachel and I in so many ways, it was good to see her back at the campground that wouldn’t be there if not for her efforts last year. Thanks Abbie!

Remember this festival was the kick-off to Leave It Green’s annual camp in. Leave It Green members will be camping out all week this week to honor and remember the original Leave It Green movement. Come down and camp-out with us! Everyone is welcome to join!

Lastly do not forget the Green Fund Vote is this week, check your emails and vote “YES”!

Party

We will be enjoying ourselves to some live music around a fire at the ski lodge and thanking all those individuals involved in leave it green and those administrators who listened to us.Â

Come out, bring friends, and enjoy the space we all protected.Â

When:Â Thursday Nov. 16th 7-10pm

Where:Â Ski Lodge

Who:Â Everyone and Friends

CAMP GROUND SAFE!
We have been informed by Slippery Rock University President Robert Smith that the campground will be preserved and that other location options will be used to enhance the campus parking situation.

I’m thinking of a party at the ski lodge sometime in the next two weeks to thank all individuals involved in informing the administrators of a potentially poor decission and the administrators for listening to us to make an excellent choice. Keep an eye out for updates!

The Open Forum Was a Great Success.

Thanks goes out to everyone who showed support for Leave it Green and made an appearance last night at the Open Forum. We really appreciate all the support the students, faculty and family members have given. Special thanks goes to anyone who asked questions of our very informative panel last night. All the questions were appropriate and professional. Without your questions, we wouldn’t have the answers we have today. Thank you.

Open Forum

Hello Friends,

Here is the latest way to support the decision to leave the campground the way it is. On Tuesday October 10th at 7:30 PM in the Advanced Technology and Science Building there will be an Open Forum “Parking Spaces or Green Spaces.” Its function will be to publicly discuss the decision to pave or not to pave the campground for use as a parking lot.

Support your views by coming out and asking good questions of the administrators that will be on the panel and get the facts from the men and women making the decisions about our university.

I suggest posting some of the good questions you’ve come up with on this site. Maybe you’ll inspire some more good questions and suggestions from others.

Clean Up

To all who Participated in the campout this week. We took down all the tents and put all of the university’s gear away and we found quite a bit of personal gear. If you left a sleeping bag up there it is in the remaining large tent, camp chairs rest against the building, and some random stuff sets on the picknick tables. If you have any questions feel free to drop Scott an email sms7999 {at} sru(.)edu

Greenspace Needs More Attention

Hey guys, just wanted to thank all of you again for the support, but we need to get more word out that this letter writing campaign is for saving the educational greenspace we have here on campus. We think that students may be getting the wrong impression of what we are trying to do. Camping is not one of our major concerns, even though we are having a lot of fun with it.
We need to emphasize our need for the campgrounds and surrounding areas as an educational space.

We would also like to gain more attention with the administration. The way to do all of this is to continue to write letters to the administration, and also try and get our parents involved with writing letters. Remember to keep it professional and also prove your point. DON’T BASH ANY IDEAS! We have to consider everything.

We also have planned for this upcoming Saturday another jam session at the campgrounds, so come on down and show your support! Keep it up guys! Also, if you would like to read the article that was on the front page of The Rocket, here’s the link for it: http://www.theonlinerocket.com/media/…/Campout.Protests.Parking.Lot.Plans

Good suggestions when thinking about your own letter….

Dave posted this on the facebook group, but they are good things to think about when anyone is writing a letter. Read over this stuff and try to answer some of these questions in your letter.

Hey everyone,
While your at the campout this week, think about these types of questions to help back your case:
1. What will you say to the administration when they ask what other options they have to parking?
2. What benifits does the campground have to the university?
3. Other ways to get around student parking. ie. Freshmen can’t have parking passes if they live x miles away or people who live in keister or south rock can’t have parking passes.
4. Where can other places be paved to make more parking if they are set fast that they want more parking?

Just a couple suggestions for everyone to start thinking about.

P.S. There is a second sample letter up on this site. It follows a slightly different form compared to the other one, but it should be just as effective. Please read both and let us know what you think. Please feel free to write your own letter as well.
